JANUARY EDITORIAL ZOOM ZOOMING INTO 2009

When I was a kid, my absolute favourite place in the world was Westwood Raceway. It was quite an amazing location, carved into the side of a mountain outside Vancouver, Canada. In the late 70s and early 80s, I used to spend a lot of time there, as my father and I used to race gokarts. I was fairly quick in my time, but I didn't really like racing that much to be honest... I found it to be quite stressful. For me, the most fun part about being at Westwood, was watching the car races. After each...

CAR SPOTLIGHT BMW PERFORMANCE IMOLA

When at Imola the other week I spotted a couple of interesting looking factory modified BMW's sitting in the paddock. First up the 123d here is fitted with the full BMW Performance package, which adds some tantalizing parts like the sportier front bumper, side skirts with air intake...
...and a nice carbon lip spoiler.
Sitting next to it was this 335i sedan, wearing some very aggressively styled 19-inch wheels. We asked the guys at BMW if we could take the car into the pits to grab some quick pictures, something they were more than happy to arrange.
The 1-series however had already been moved into the little display booth in the BMW hospitality area, but it didn't matter as the tiled floor and excellent lighting made for a nice ambiance.
The exterior package is joined by a pair of reclinable bucket seats, clad in soft suede and leather. They are even fitted with a side airbag, just in case things go wrong.
They are accompanied by the sports steering wheel, which on top of the suede leather features a digital display on the top part of the rim and sequentially lit LED strips just like on an F1 steering wheel.
The BMW Performance treatment is topped off with carbon fiber trim for the interior.
The 123d rides on special 18-inch wheels and Bridgestone Potenza tires. Lowered suspension help sharpen up the handling while the massive 6-pot calipers from the 135i keep braking under control.
Carbon mirrors are the cherry on the cake!
The sedate look of the 4-door 335i has been spiced up with BMW Performance front and rear bumpers. Notice the blacked out grille, a very nice touch.
Under the hood the twin turbocharged 3L straight six has been remapped to offer an additional 20 HP, bringing power up to 326 HP. Torque gets a nice bump too.
Here is a closer view of those BMW Performance 19-inch wheels. Would have been nice to see the same 6-pot brakes from the 123d used on the 335i, as I'm sure they would definitely come in handy given the power and weight of the larger car. It is great to see BMW is giving enthusiasts top quality products to spice up their cars, let's hope the line-up will grow in the future with all other BMW models being catered for.

NEW CARSFORD FOCUS RS500

Ford this week have unveiled the latest iteration of it's Focus RS line, the RS500. It's a homage to the original Sierra Cosworth RS500 and like it's predecessor, it'll also be limited to a run of just 500 cars. The car wil be making it's first public debut at the Leipzig Motor Show on April 9th.
The power levels are up to 350PS from the same 2.5 litre turbo charged powerplant. The power hike has been acheived by using a larger air-to-air intercooler, uprated air filter, a larger diameter downpipe, an uprated fuel pump and a remap to take advantage of the new parts. These numbers deliver a 0-60 of 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 164MPH. Not shabby for a car that's FWD.
The matt black finish is courtesy of a specially developed 3M foil wrap, the cars are actually metallic black underneath the wrap. Some splashes of colour are provided with red calipers, red 500 badging and blue RS badging.
The interior is finished with red detailing, a contrast to the blue provided on the standard RS Focus. The centre console has a carbon fibre finish and a unique plaque stating the cars model number. The front seats are bespoke Recaro sports items, which can be finished in leather.
To ensure the durability of these upgrades, the car has been subjected to a series of tests which have focused on the car's track capabilities. The tests included a massive stint at the Nordschleife, where Ford had three of their own racing drivers and a team of engineers complete a whopping 10,000KM non-stop of driving the Green Hell. After 500 laps, Ford were happy enough with the car and were confident that an eight minute laptime is within reach of the car.

COLLECTABLESTHE CHRIS LEE COLLECTION PT 2

In the last post, we looked at Chris Lee's overall collection . This time around, we'll be taking a more detailed look a few of his favorite models he's built. First, we'll start off with this street going version of a Ferrari 575 LM. It started as a Kyosho model with full race livery. He removed all the livery and gutted out the bottom of the car. In the last post, we looked at Chris Lee's overall collection. This time around, we'll be taking a more detailed look a few of his favorite models he's built.
First, we'll start off with this street going version of a Ferrari 575 LM. It started as a Kyosho model with full race livery. He removed all the livery and gutted out the bottom of the car.
Chris also modified the wheels and slammed the already slammed 575 LM even more.
After he slammed the car, it became too low. So he had to remake the bottom and side skirts out of modeling clay and bondo to clear the ground. By doing that, he was able achieve the crazy stance it has now yet also retain its functions like rolling on all 4 wheels and steering.
The engine that originally came with the Kyosho model wasn't very spectacular. So Chris created a whole new engine out of various parts. He used the original 575's block but mated it with a Lamborghini V12 head and topped it with Ferrari F456 intake manifolds. It makes no mechanical sense, but Chris assured me that it looks a lot better than what came with the original model. I believe him.
Chris removed the race car's stripped out and caged interior and replaced it with a full interior with seats and carpet from various street Ferrari models.

New Car: 2012 Buick Verano (U.S)

Buick has unveiled the all-new Verano compact luxury sedan, that will premier at the 2011 Detroit motor show.

The Verano will go on sale in late 2011 and will be available with equipment like 10 airbags, heated steering wheel and a next-generation radio system with OnStar. Powering the Verano will be a 177bhp 2.4 litre petrol engine, that produces 230Nm (170lb-ft) of torque. This is linked to a 6 speed automatic and will allow the car to hit 60mph from 0mph in 8 seconds. A 31mpg highway figure is expected.

A 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol will be offered in the future.

John Schwegman, vice president of Buick marketing said:

"Verano expands our lineup, continues Buick's momentum and gives us a great opportunity to attract a new generation of customers with a product that delivers on their expectations for design, performance and technology"

"It is a smart choice that delivers unexpected luxury in a compact sedan - and it will compete head-to-head with competitors from Audi and Lexus."

Inside, the Verano receives soft-touch plastics and premium leather on the dashboard. Buick claims the Verano is the quietest car in its class thanks to acoustical laminated glass, triple door seals, and specially manufactured 17” alloy wheels.

Standard features will include 17” alloy wheels, 10 airbags (twin front, side, curtain, knees, and rear-side), ambient lighting, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, blue projector beam headlamps, climate control, electronic parking brake, front & rear electric windows, steering wheel mounted audio controls w/cruise control, leather steering wheel, electric power steering, and AUX input.

On the options list will be two 18” alloy wheels, metallic paint, leather interior w/heated front seats, keyless start, heated steering wheel, touch-screen satellite navigation system w/Bluetooth & USB port, XM satellite radio, BOSE sound system, and remote vehicle start.

In the Verano, the heated steering wheel and seats are related with the remote start feature. In temperatures lower than 45°F (7°C), the heated steering wheel and seats automatically start.
